Beads have been considered a fashion accessory since long. They look enchanting in any form, be it bracelet, necklace, anklet or amulet. However, it is trollbeads that truly steal the show when it comes to beaded accessories.
Trollbeads are of Scandinavian origin and have been in existence for over 30 years now. These are unique pieces of fashion jewellery drawing inspiration from nature, zodiac signs, fables, facial expressions and man-made objects like castles, tiaras and crowns. Trollbeads are also shaped like birds, animals, mermaids and cupids. Then there are those troll beads that are representative of cultural biodiversity and religious signs. Some even have colourful patterns or other variations that make them unique.
The first troll bead was made in 1976 by Svend Nielsen, a skilled goldsmith from Denmark. Soren, the young son of Svend inherited the art of handcrafting jewellery and he set out to further enhance the designs of the charms created by his father. It was he who first carefully sculpted a total of 6 different emotions/expressions of the human face on a silver orb. He then drilled a hole in the centre and strung it on a gold chain. This is when the first trollbead was born which was subsequently followed by several others giving rise to a company that manufactured them making it available to common public. Today, the trollbead company is owned by Lise Aagaard, daughter of Svend Nielsen, and is known by the name ‘Lise Aagaard Copenhagen’ as it is located in Copenhagen. Many others have followed and opened their own trollbead manufacturing units. At present, there are over 18 international trollbead manufacturers scattered in different parts of the world and there are over 200 different models of trollbeads.
Trollbeads are made using a combination of the finest of elements like sterling silver, pure gold, Italian Murano glass pieces, real pearls and semi-precious or precious stones like amethysts, topazes and rose quartzes. Trollbeads can either be created in hard-modelled wax cast or red-hot molten glass. They are then finished with metal or precious stones or are given different shapes.
The speciality about trollbeads is that no two trollbeads can ever be the same. This lends a sense of individuality to the wearer. Interchangeable trollbead necklaces and bracelets are available too and come with spare trollbeads. This way you can experiment with combinations everyday to freely express your individuality.
