A bassinet is a bed especially designed for small babies. It provides an environment like a cocoon which a new-born finds very comforting. A bassinet can generally be used from the time of birth until the baby is about four months old. A bassinet is also very effective in hospitals where special sealed bassinets are used in neonatal Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Also, bassinets are especially safe since research on this subject has proved that using such beds can reduce SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

A bassinet can be stationary or portable. Light and portable bassinets are called “Moses baskets” as opposed to sturdy bassinets, which are not as portable. Portable bassinets are usually made from wicker. The function of both types is the same since they are used to carry a baby from one place to another without disturbing him/her. One type of bassinet design allows it to be raised with the help of a stand. This is quite helpful as it means you don’t have to bend down while tending to the baby. Bassinets often have wheels and can be used as prams. After the baby is four months old it is not advisable to use a bassinet. At that age, the baby has a tendency of rolling over and might fall out of the bassinet.

Since bassinets cannot be used for babies older than four months, some new innovations have taken place. Now a bassinet can be converted into a piece of furniture for the baby, or a piece of storage furniture, and even into a chair or a table. This helps increase the bassinet’s lifespan and provides more value for money because parents can continue using the bassinet after the baby has outgrown it.

These days, the basic design of bassinets has changed completely from a puffy “wedding dress” look to a more practical and a streamlined look. These new bassinets are made from water-repellent materials that don’t rust. Most bassinets are covered in a stain-resistant fabric and have removable baskets. Bassinets these days are usually made from stainless steel, bamboo, plywood or a chrome metal. The mattresses are usually about two inches thick and are made of a fire and moisture-resistant material.
