A pushchair is used to transport a baby or a toddler from one place to another. A pushchair is known as ‘stroller’ in the US and ‘buggy’ in the UK. A pushchair can be used till a child reaches the age of three.
Traditionally, a pushchair could only accommodate a child in a seated position. However, there are many different types of pushchairs that are available now. For example, there are pushchairs for twins and siblings specially designed to seat two children. In such a dual pushchair, siblings or twins can be seated either side-by-side or in tandem. Triple pushchairs are also available these days which can accommodate triplets. Triple pushchairs can usually be used till babies reach the age of four. Both dual and triple pushchairs can accommodate babies of either the same age or different ages.
Modern pushchairs can also accommodate a sleeping child. In such a pushchair, the child can either lie down or sit upright. A 3-in-1 pushchair usually has a chassis which contains a baby seat. The baby seat of the pushchair can usually be detached so that the baby can be carried easily from one place to another. This detachable chassis of the pushchair allows it to be folded and stored in the boot of a car. Such type of a 3-in-1 pushchair is generally used during travels as it can function as a pushchair, a pram as well as a car seat.
William Kent is credited with the idea of inventing a pushchair in 1733. The Duke of Devonshire wanted some transportation for his children. So Kent, who was his garden architect, invented a basket to which he attached wheels. This ‘basket on wheels’ was the initial version of the pushchair. This first version of the pushchair was designed to be drawn by goats or ponies. Soon, royalty and other members of the British aristocracy adopted Kent’s pushchair.
Initially, the pushchair was made from wicker, wood and brass and was given royal brand names like ‘Princess’, Duchess’ and ‘Windsor’. The first reversible pushchair was designed by Richardson in 1889. In this version of the pushchair, the baby could sit facing the parent or could be seated facing outwards. Richardson’s pushchair was also more manoeuvrable. Gradually, safety features were introduced in modern pushchairs. Safety features included brakes, bigger wheels and stronger pushchair frames.
