The Nokia N73 is a smart phone and is one of the best S60 3rd edition phones to be introduced. This phone is described as a “multimedia computer” and is loaded with many software applications, including contacts, messaging, picture and video galleries, a music player, a Visual FM Radio, RealPlayer, an IM client, a WAP browser, a full web browser based on KHTML/WebKit, a Microsoft Office document viewer, a PDF viewer and many exciting games. Most of these applications support “background execution”, for example, while browsing the Internet, users can also listen to music.
Users don’t need to close any applications if they wish to switch from one task to another, for example, they can type a text message and switch to e-mailing without closing the messaging application. The Nokia N73 comes in three colours – silver gray / deep plum, frost white / metallic red and frost white / mocha.
The N73 has good reception and is among the strongest RF (ReignFree) phones. The voice clarity and volume for both incoming and outgoing calls is pretty distinct with no distortion whatsoever. For loud places like a disco, the “Pop-Port” stereo headset is ideal. The Nokia N73 comes with Nokia’s built-in voice command software, which provides speaker-independent speech recognition and dialling. In addition, the Nokia N73 also features speed dialling and supports call waiting, conference calls and caller photo identification.
The Nokia N73 is a quad band world phone that supports GSM (Global System for Mobile) service. It also has the capability to support EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) or UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephone System) services wherever applicable. It can easily switch between services to provide non-stop usage.
The most distinguishable feature of the N73 is the 3.2MP auto focus camera. There is a dedicated gallery button beside the shutter button that allows photos to be viewed in full-screen “landscape” mode. Above the display screen, there is a secondary VGA camera that is used for self-portraits and video conferencing. The presence of a light sensor automatically adjusts display brightness. In the Nokia N73, Java and Symbian (S60 release 3) applications can be installed easily. This can either be done using the Nokia PC Suite software that comes along with the pack or the installer application loaded on the phone itself. The N73 supports access via Bluetooth and USB mass storage, making it possible to transfer large collections of files to and from it.
The Nokia N73 also has a “Music Edition” in which the multimedia button on the keypad has been replaced with a button that starts the music player. The control interface has been made more user-friendly. It is now much easier to select ’play’, ’pause’, and ‘stop’, ’next’ and ’previous’ by directly pushing the phone joystick in the appropriate direction. The Music Edition also has a 2GB memory card and is available only in black.
