Rosalie Anderson MacDowell, better known as Andie MacDowell, was born on 21 April, 1958, in Gaffney, South Carolina. Her mother was a music teacher and her father was a lumber executive. Their family’s summer home has now been converted to a bed and breakfast inn.
In 1978, MacDowell quit Winthrop College and went to live with her sister Beverly in Colombia. Like many teenagers, she worked at McDonald’s, Pizza Hut and at nightclubs. In 1970, MacDowell worked at the Carolina Beach Clubs, one of the emerging “disco night clubs” of the time. With her DJ friend Chuck Neal, MacDowell organised a fashion show at the club. The show turned out to be a turning point in her life.
MacDowell was immediately signed up with Elite Model Management, after a photographer from a New York modelling agency noticed her. There’s been no looking back for her since.
Today, despite a successful career in Hollywood, she continues to be part of the TV and advertising world. She is a spokesmodel for the world’s largest cosmetics and beauty company, the L’Oreal Group. It was her TV commercials for Calvin Klein that led to her first film role.
In 1984, she made her film debut in Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes. Another small role followed in the average teenage hit St. Elmo’s Fire (1985). But her career only took off in 1989, when director Steven Soderbergh cast her in the pioneering film, Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989) with actor James Spader. MacDowell won rave reviews and nominations for her performance as Ann, a sexually repressed housewife whose husband has an affair with her sister.
Her movie career continued to climb, with leading roles in Green Card (1990), Hudson Hawk (1991) and The Object of Beauty (1991). Her next box office hits came with Groundhog Day (1993) and Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), which also starred Hugh Grant.
On the personal front, she has been married twice and has three children (a son and two daughters). MacDowell lives in Los Angeles, California.
