Bridget Fonda was born into a family of artists. Her grandfather was Henry Fonda, her father, was Peter Fonda, and her aunt was Jane Fonda – all Hollywood celebrities. As well as this, her mother was an artist. It was natural for Fonda to make films her career, but it was her own love for the art rather than her family that made her an actress of great calibre.
Bridget Fonda was born on 27 January, 1964 in Los Angeles. She became interested in acting after appearing in a high school play called Harvey. She joined the New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and later the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. She refused any help from her famous acting relatives and preferred to make her own way. However, she still claimed to have stage fright because of the high expectation upon her due to her family background. She performed in a lot of stage productions before moving to films.
Fonda’s first film role was in Partners with Ryan O’Neal and John Hurt in 1982, but she didn’t have a big speaking part. It was almost six years later that she was offered a good role. She played opposite John Hurt as Marie Rice-Davies in the film Scandal (1989), which was based on a true story. Her role won much praise and she was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role at the Golden Globe Awards. Her other major films include Doc Hollywood (1991) with Michael J. Fox.
Fonda’s’s first major part came playing a journalist in The Godfather: Part III (1990). This particular role earned her some good reviews. However, she continued with small roles and theatre productions. In 1992, she starred in Single White Female and the film was a big success. Not long after this film, Cameron Crowe offered her a major role in Singles (1992), which was apparently written with Fonda in mind.
Fonda went on to win a few meaningful roles in films such as City Hall (1996), Point of No Return (1993), Jackie Brown (1997) and Kiss of the Dragon (2001) with directors like Sam Raimi, Luc Besson and Quentin Tarantino. She was so busy that she turned down David E. Kelly’s offer of a lead role in the television series Ally McBeal. However, later she starred in Lake Placid (2000) for Kelly.
In 1998, Fonda sustained minor back injuries in a car accident. A year later, she married to film composer David Elfman and she hasn’t acted in a film since choosing a quiet family life as a wife and mother.
