Denzel Washington, Jr. is an American actor, director and producer well known for his portrayal of real-life personalities like Malcolm X, Frank Lucas, Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, Steve Biko, Herman Boone and Melvin B. Tolson. Born on 28 December, 1954, he was the middle child of a Pentecostal minister father and a beautician mother. When he was 14, young Washington was sent to boarding school to keep him and his older sisters away from their parents’ divorce. He became interested in acting and performed in drama productions while still a student. After completing his B.A. in Drama and Journalism at Fordham University, he attended the American Conservatory Theatre to pursue his interest in acting.
Washington made his debut in film with the movie Carbon Copy in 1981. His big break came with St. Elsewhere, a popular television hospital drama. After several minor stints on television and stage, he took the lead role in the Richard Attenborough movie Cry Freedom (1987) for which he won an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Subsequently, he received an Oscar for the movie Glory in 1989.
