An Academy-award winning actress, Diane Keaton was born as Diane Hall in Los Angeles on 5 January, 1946. She is the daughter of Jack Hall, a civil engineer, and Dorothy, an amateur photographer. Diane was first attracted towards showbusiness when her mother won the Mrs Los Angeles pageant. While studying at the Santa Ana High School, she participated in a number of school plays. After high school, she went on to study acting at Santa Ana College and Orange Coast College. However, she dropped out of college to pursue her dream of becoming a star. Keaton moved to Manhattan where she started studying acting at the Neighbourhood Playhouse. On joining the Actors’ Equity Association, she realized that someone with the name Diane Hall was already registered. So she changed her last name to Keaton, which was her mother’s maiden name.
Diane started working as an understudy on the Broadway production Hairin 1968. Later she worked with Woody Allen in his play Play It Again, Sam in 1969. She gained little recognition from this play, but went on to make her debut in the movie Lovers and Other Strangers in 1970. Diane got a big break when she was cast as Kay Adams opposite Al Pacino in The Godfather in 1972. The movie went on to achieve critical as well as commercial success, making her a bigger name in Hollywood. Diane Keaton was romantically involved with Woody Allen, who directed her in series of memorable movies like Play It Again, Sam, Sleeper (1973), Annie Hall (1977) and Manhattan (1979). For her role in Annie Hall, Keaton won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1977. She also appeared in the sequel to The Godfather, The Godfather, Part II (1974).
Diane Keaton was also involved with Warren Beatty in 1978 and in he cast her in the movie, Reds (1981). She was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the movie. In the 1980s, she starred in many movies including The Little Drummer Girl (1984), Crimes of the Heart (1986), Baby Boom (1987), and The Good Mother (1988).She also directed the movie Heaven in 1987. In the 1990s, she worked on memorable movies such as The Godfather, Part III (1990), Father of the Bride (1991), Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993), The First Wives Club (1996) and Marvin’s Room (1996). She also directed the movie Unstrung Heroes in 1995. In 2000, she directed and starred in the movie, Hanging Up, alongside Meg Ryan and Lisa Kudrow. She also appeared in a number of television movies. Some of her latest movies include Something’s Gotta Give (2003), The Family Stone (2005), Because I Said So (2007) and Mad Money (2008).
Diane Keaton has two adopted children, Dexter and Duke. She dabbles in photography and has even published a book featuring her own photographs. She is also involved in protecting and restoring historic buildings. This dynamic actress continues to mesmerize audience and critics with her performances.
