Eddie Murphy, a renowned actor and comedian, was born on 3 April, 1961, in Brooklyn, New York to Charles Murphy, a police officer, and Lillian. He lost his father at a very young age and in 1970 his mother remarried Vernon Lynch. From an early age, Murphy displayed a talent for mimicry. His comic antics and hilarious impersonations found an audience in his family and friends. Eddie attended the Roosevelt Junior-Senior High School where he gained popularity due to his sense of humour. He would perform stand-up acts and do impressions for his friends in school. Murphy was also voted the Most Popular Student in school. By the time he turned 15 years old, he had started performing at various comedy clubs in New York. By the time he was 18 years old, Murphy was well known on the comedy circuit.
Eddie Murphy got his major break when he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1980. He performed hilarious sketches like “Mister Robinson’s Neighbourhood”, “James Brown Celebrity Hot Tub” and “Ebony & Ivory”. His unforgettable characters like Gumby and Buckwheat made Murphy extremely popular with audiences. Murphy quit the show during the 1983–1984 season and decided to pursue acting in Hollywood. Murphy made his debut in the movie, 48 Hrs. (1982) which went on to become a smash hit. In the 1980s, he starred in hit movies like Trading Places (1983), Beverly Hills Cop (1984), The Golden Child (1986), Coming to America (1988) and Beverly Hills Cop II (1987). Murphy also got into music and recorded two chart hits in the 1980s. He recorded the album How Could It Be in 1985.
In the 1990s, Murphy acted in movies such as Another 48 Hrs. (1990), Beverly Hills Cop III (1994), The Nutty Professor (1996), Doctor Dolittle (1998) and Bowfinger (1999). He also recorded another album – Love’s Alright. Post 2000, he has starred in movies like Dr. Dolittle 2 (2001), I Spy (2002), Daddy Day Care (2003) and Dreamgirls (2006). His voiceover as Donkey in all three Shrek movies helped to immortalize him as one of Hollywood’s comic geniuses. In 2008, he will be seen in movies NowhereLand and Starship Dave. Murphy has been nominated for several awards and won a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe for his role in the movie Dreamgirls for the Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
Eddie Murphy married Nicole Mitchell on 18 March, 1993, and they have five children. After his marriage ended, Murphy was romantically linked with Melanie Brown from The Spice Girls. Though the relationship didn’t last, they had a daughter. He also has a son with Tamara Hood. Eddie Murphy is involved with a lot of charities and donates money for cancer and Aids research
