Hugh Grant is considered by many as a charming, handsome, witty and talented actor. Hugh John Mungo Grant was born on 9 September, 1960, in London to Fynvola Grant, a teacher, and James Grant, an artist and carpet salesman. His family is associated with the military and his parents both have a military background. Grant studied at Wetherby School and later in 1969 at Latymer Upper School. A bright student and an all-rounder, he participated in school plays and was also good at various sports. In 1979 he received a scholarship to New College, Oxford, and began studying English Literature. During his college years, Grant acted in several stage productions and also joined the Oxford University Dramatic Society. In 1982 Grant made his debut in the movie Privileged , which was an Oxford production. The film wasn’t a success but Grant went on to turn down a scholarship at the Courtauld Institute in London to focus on his acting career.
After his graduation, Grant took various jobs. He worked as a tutor and with a comedy troupe, and wrote comedy sketches and radio adverts. He even created a comedy group called The Jockeys of Norfolk. The group performed at various comedy clubs and even at the Edinburgh Festival. The popularity of the group led to a television pilot, but the show never took off. Grant continued acting in television series until he landed a role in the Merchant Ivory movie Maurice in 1987. Grant’s performance in the movie caught the attention of audiences and critics. He received movie offers and in the late 1980s starred in movies like The Lair of the White Worm (1988), The Dawning (1988) and White Mischief (1987). However, it was only in the 1990s that Grant finally achieved success.
In the early 1990s, Grant starred in a number of movies including Impromptu (1991), Bitter Moon (1992), The Remains of the Day (1993) and Night Train to Venice (1993). It was the 1994 movie Four Weddings and a Funeral that made Grant a household name. He was nominated for a series of awards and he won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for Best Actor. Grant acted in many hit movies in the late 1990s and his movie credits include Sense and Sensibility (1995), Nine Months (1995), Mickey Blue Eyes (1999) and Notting Hill (1999). Post 2000, he has acted in hits like Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), Two Weeks Notice (2002), About a Boy (2002), Love Actually (2003), Bridget Jones : The Edge of Reason (2004) and Music and Lyrics (2007).
Hugh Grant was in a relationship with model and actress Elizabeth Hurley from 1987 but they split in 2000. He started seeing Jemima Khan in 2004, but they separated in 2007. Hugh Grant’s classic good looks, honest performances and great comic timing have won him many fans across the world.
