The recently released Hollywood movie, Iron Man , is based on the popular Marvel Comics character of the same name. Many of us have grown up reading comic books full of superheroes like Batman, Spiderman and Superman. In a fictional world, these superheroes with their invincible powers always mange to save the world and triumph over the evil. Apart from comic books, these superheroes have appeared in movies, video games and television series as well. Part of the Marvel Comics’ universe, Iron Man made his debut in Tales of Suspense #39 in March 1963. The character was created as a joint collaboration between Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby.
Tony Stark is a brilliant man who is captured by his enemies and seriously injured. He designs powered armour, which is a cast iron suit armed with weapons and flying capabilities. He thus saves himself from the enemies and becomes Iron Man. The powered armour comprises sophisticated technology, devices and weapons that give him superhuman strength and help him fight evil. His weapons include repulsor rays that can be fired from his palms. He also has a uni-beam projector in his chest, pulse bolts, an electromagnetic pulse generator, and an energy shield. Iron Man can generate ultra-freon and also create and manipulate magnetic fields and sonic blasts. He can connect to communication systems like satellites, mobile phones, and computers around the world. With a technopathic control of armour, Iron Man can arm himself at any time. He can also heal quickly and can fly faster than a jet plane.
The Iron Man animated series has many fans. The movie, Iron Man , was directed by Jon Favreau and produced by Avi Arad and Kevin Feige. The part of Tony Stark/Iron Man was played by Robert Downey Jr, and Terrence Howard played the part of Lt Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes. Gwyneth Paltrow played Stark’s secretary, Virginia "Pepper" Potts, and Jeff Bridges played Obadiah Stane/Iron Monger.
The plot of the movie is based around Tony Stark, who is a weapons designer who goes to Afghanistan to showcase his newly designed missile to the Air Force. However, he gets captured by the enemy, who demand that he designs a new weapon. An injured Stark designs power armour and escapes. On returning to the United States, he has to battle Iron Monger. The movie boasts great special effects and performances. A video game based on the movie will also be released in 2008.
