Smallville is a story set in a fictional town where the young Clark Kent grows up, discovering the powers that will one day make him Superman. It is based on Superman’s childhood adventures from the popular comic Superman.
A meteor shower brings Clark Kent to the earth in Smallville , a fictional place where he is found by his adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent. Clark’s arrival is not smooth but he still strikes up friendships with the people whom he unintentionally hurt. Lana Lang, the girl he is in love with, loses her parents in the meteor shower, and Lex Luthor, who he shares a friendship with, loses his hair.
Though Clark has two best friends, Pete Ross and Chloë Sullivan, he can’t tell them his secrets as he is trying to come to terms with them himself. Clark doesn’t know at first that he has been adopted but as he discovers his powers one by one, he begins to channel these powers into helping others.
Smallville does not deal with the superhuman activities of Superman but his life before he becomes a superhero. It deals with his loneliness and the instability of his relationships. There are conflicting emotions in his relationship with Lana and his friendship with Lex, his future nemesis. Clark’s loneliness rises from his fear of not being accepted because of his powers. He considers himself to be an alien.
Tom Welling was chosen for the role of Clark Kent and perfectly portrays a character who is strong yet vulnerable. Kristin Kreuk plays the role of Lana Lang who loves Clark but is also lonely and troubled after the loss of her parents. The decision on who should portray Lex Luthor was a difficult one. In Smallville, Lex is manipulative but vulnerable too. He is looking for unconditional love but is also curious to know about Clark’s powers. This develops into a situation where they become friends but don’t really trust each other. Michael Rosenbaum finally won this role after two auditions.
Smallville broke the record for the highest rated debut in America and the series is currently in its seventh season.
