Teletubbies is a popular children’s television programme. Created specially for pre-schoolers, this BBC television series was developed and produced by Ragdoll Productions. Teletubbies was created by Anne Wood and Andrew Davenport. They decided to make a fun series that would keep children happy whilst also helping them with their mental and emotional development. The show included madcap chases, weird sounds and a lot of fun elements, all designed to establish a connection with small children. Teletubbies made its debut on the BBC on 31 March, 1997, and ended its run on 5 January, 2001. The voiceovers for the television series were performed by Toyah Willcox, Eric Sykes and Tim Whitnall, who was the narrator. Teletubbies was targeted at children between the ages of one and four. However, it turned out to be a hit with older children and teenagers too!
Teletubbies has four main characters – Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po. Tinky Winky, the biggest of all the Teletubbies, is purple coloured and has a triangular antenna over his head. He is always seen with his red bag. Dipsy is green in colour, has a straight dipstick antenna over his head and is stubborn. He enjoys wearing his black and white hat and carries it with him wherever he goes. Laa-Laa is yellow coloured female Teletubby and has a curly antenna. She is the best singer among the Teletubbies , is always concerned about people, and loves bouncing her big orange ball. Po is the smallest Teletubby. Po is red in colour and has a small antenna over her head in the shape of a loop. Her favourite object is her scooter. The Teletubbies are happy in their world and live in a Tubbytronic Superdome, which is a technologically advanced house. They like hugging each other and their voices sound like babies gurgling. “Eh-oh”, “big hug” and “bye-bye” are among their best-loved phrases. The Teletubbies like eating Tubby Custard and Tubby Toast.
Teletubbies is a colourful television series, featuring interesting sounds and shapes that hold the attention of little children. It also shows a safe and happy environment. The Teletubbies songs, dances and rhymes have all struck a chord with children and had a positive impact.
Teletubbies has been aired in many countries across the world. A total of 365 episodes have been shown to date. Teletubbies episodes are available in DVD format. Audio CDs featuring songs and rhymes are also on the market. Teletubbies T-shirts are popular too.
