The iPod shuffle is one of Appleās digital audio players and was launched in 2005. Though an Apple iPod, it is quite inexpensive. This was the first iPod to use flash memory instead of a hard disk for data storage. An updated second generation iPod shuffle was introduced in 2006.
The first generation iPod shuffle weighs 0.78 ounces. It has four buttons: Play/Pause, Next Song/Fast Forward, Previous Song/Fast Reverse, and arrow keys for volume adjustments. A three-way switch on the back of the shuffle allows you to switch it off, play music from a playlist, or shuffle a playlist. Its battery can be charged by connecting to a computer’s USB port and the charge lasts for up to 12 hours. The lanyard allows you to hang the iPod shuffle around your neck.
The flash memory in the iPod shuffle allows you to play songs in a random order from a loaded playlist. An autofill feature in iTunes allows your iPod shuffle to select songs randomly from your music library. It also allows you to copy up to 240 songs to the iPod shuffle’s memory. There are some special features for your iPod shuffle in iTunes. One of these is the ability to convert the original song file into a smaller lower bit rate file to be sent to the iPod shuffle. The iPod shuffle also acts as a USB flash drive. Through iTunes, you can divide the storage space between storing files and music.
The second generation iPod shuffle was launched in 2006. The new model measures less than half of the first generation at 41.2 x 27.3 x 10.5mm. It includes built-in belt clip. The earlier three-way switch was replaced by separate switches for power and shuffle functions. It is compatible with computer running the Windows operating system, but does not work with the Macintosh operating system.
The iPod shuffle package comes with a dock that enables USB connectivity. Like the first generation iPod shuffle, this model also retains its functions as a flash drive. With this model, you can play MP3, MP3 VBR, AAC, Protected AAC, Audible (formats 2, 3 and 4), WAV and AIFF audio formats.
The iPod shuffle is available in four new colours, in addition to the earlier five colours. Apple and other companies have introduced a range of accessories such as armband attachments, a sport case, customized Dock Connectors, T-shirts, belt clips, AC/DC power plugs, earphones, and FM transmitters.
The iPod shuffle has successfully tapped into the lower-end market for digital audio players.
