The Aston Villa Football Club is also known as ‘The Villa’ and ‘The Villains’. Aston Villa is one of the oldest football clubs in England with a great success story and an exciting history. The club of Aston Villa was founded by a quartet of football enthusiasts, namely Jack Hughes, Frederick Matthews, Walter Price and William Scattergood. Aston Villa has about 20 major honours which include winning the FA Cup, the UEFA League and the Division Championship (7 times). Initially formed in 1874, this Birmingham based club was taken over by Randy Lerner from the previous owner, Doug Ellis, in 2006.
The first match that Aston Villa played was against the other local team, Aston Brook. St. Mary’s had a prerequisite that Aston Villa had to play the first half of the game in accordance with rugby rules and the latter half following the rules of football. Going on to win the game under the captaincy of Scottish George Ramsay, Aston Villa became the best team of the Midlands and a name to reckon with in professional football.
In the beginning, Aston Villa experimented with several colour combinations for its uniforms. For six years, the William McGregor selection of black jerseys with the heraldic crest of a red lion stayed put. There is no officially stated reason why the club adopted what are its now vastly famous colours – claret and blue. The story goes something like this - George Ramsay and McGregor who were both Scots, influenced the decision to have a combination of blue and Maroon with the Scottish Lion rampant as the badge of Aston Villa.
The European Champions Cup has been won by only four English Teams and Aston Villa is one of them. Aston Villa has an impressive record of goals scored in the English Premier League against top notch teams. In the season of 1930 - 1931, the total goals scored by Aston Villa were an impressive 128. Archie Hunter from Aston Villa became the only player to score goals in every game played in the FA cup in the year 1887. During the years 1888 - 1901, a span of 13 years and 19 games, Aston Villa enjoyed the position of being the unrivalled champions in the FA Cup.
There are many ‘Aston Villa’ products on the market bearing the club’s distinguishing crest such as Christmas baubles, golf towels, golf umbrellas, the 1982 European Cup Final shirt in white, a little snow man, wet bags, shoes bags, goalkeeper gloves, lunch bags, window hangers, shirt key rings and much more.
