A baseball bat is also known as a ‘lumber” in American slang, especially when a skilled batter uses it. It is usually made from wood or metal and is no thicker than 3 inches in diameter and not more than 2 pounds in weight. It is used to hit the ball thrown by the pitcher.
While a baseball bat might be a very common object for an American, it is in fact a complex object consisting of many parts. The barrel of a baseball bat is the thickest part and ideally, the ball should connect with the bat only at its barrel. The exact juncture at which the baseball bat must typically hit the ball is known as the “sweet spot” and this is determined according to the swinging style of the batter and the construction of the bat. The end of the bat is known as the tip and at the other end, the barrel narrows down gradually to thin out and become baseball bat’s handle. The handle is usually wrapped in a grip made of rubber or cloth. The handle ends with a knob, a thicker bulb, which prevents the bat from slipping out of the hands of the batter.
These days, the shape of a baseball is much more uniform and proportionate in comparison to the shapes which were used earlier and experimented upon. Also, it requires a great deal of skill and training before a bat can be made because has to be carved very carefully so that it can allow a balanced swing. Bat turners are trained artisans who actually create the baseball bat first, by selecting billets, which are smoothly shaven logs of wood, six sided and specially logged to make baseball bats. Using callipers, weighing machines and other instruments, the bat turners sand and shave the billet so that it reaches the exact measurements of a model bat.
The baseball bat is then stamped with the brand of the company and the trademark is placed a quarter turn away from the baseball bat’s “sweet spot” so that it is visible to people when it hits the ball. Also, if it is placed some distance away from the sweet spot then the trademark doesn’t fade away or suffer wear and tear as quickly as the rest of the bat does. The bat is then varnished and is ready for use.
