A squash racket is used to play indoor squash. Modern squash rackets are 27 inches in length with a width of 8.5 inches. The maximum permitted weight of a squash racket is 255 grams. However, lighter and stronger rackets weigh around 120 to 150 grams. A lightweight racket helps reduce player fatigue, improves the speed of the stroke, increases manoeuvrability and facilitates an easier swing.
Earlier models of the squash racket were made from laminated wood. These days, squash rackets are much lighter and are made of materials such as titanium, graphite, borazon or Kevlar. The strings of older squash rackets were made using natural gut. Synthetic strings have now replaced natural gut as the material of choice as these are more durable and stronger. The size of the maximum strung area is 500 square centimetres.
The racket strings have an important role to play in the game. A larger strung area provides better accuracy as there is a greater sweet spot with which to hit the ball. A larger sweet spot means more control. Squash rackets with lower string tension provide higher power. Thinner strings on the head of the squash racket provide more power and greater touch over the ball. Thicker strings provide durability, however, at the cost of touch and power.
Beginners generally make the mistake of buying the lightest squash rackets. However, a heavier racket is generally recommended. Lighter squash rackets are harder to control but as skill and technique develops do give a better feel of the ball. Choosing the type of racket depends on an individual’s preferences. Some players prefer a slightly flexible squash racket, whereas some prefer a stiffer one. One must choose a squash racket carefully and avoid cheaper rackets with less structural integrity.
