A treadmill is an indoor exercise device which allows users to simulate the motion of running or walking while staying in one place. A treadmill has a belt made of rubber or synthetic rubber which is attached to and connects two rollers. There is a platform below the belt which supports the belt and the weight of the person using the treadmill.
As a person walks or runs on the treadmill, the belt moves, simulating the motion of walking or running. Motorised treadmills require electricity to turn a motor connected to the rollers. The motor is connected to a control device which makes it possible for the user to vary the speed of the treadmill. Motorised treadmills allow users to walk, sprint, run or jog. In addition, treadmills provide users with information such as the time and distance run.
Motorised treadmills provide users with an incline function to help burn more calories and provide a higher degree of cardiovascular exercise. Users have an option to select the degree of incline thereby simulating the sensation of running up a hill. Treadmills also have an emergency stop mechanism which comes in to effect when a user pulls a string or rope thereby stopping the motor of the treadmill. In cold climates and inhospitable regions a treadmill is the best replacement for a long jog or a walk.
Modern treadmills provide users with data on their progress over a period of time. For example, they show how their endurance has increased, their stamina status at the end of an exercise period, and how many calories they have burnt. The latest versions also provide customised settings and options, and users can store their exercise data for future reference. Information on the heart rate and blood pressure of the user can also be given when sensors are connected to the user’s body.
