Established in 1913, the company is based in Chicago and is a subsidiary of the Finland based Amer Sports. The company began as Ashland Manufacturing Company in 1913 and then changed its name to Thomas E. Wilson Company in 1916. In 1931, the name of the company was changed again to Wilson Sporting Goods Company.

Wilson basketballs are the official equipment for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
