Pokemon are a class of unique magical creatures that battle each other when ordered by their trainers. Japanese game designer Satoshi Tajiri conceived the basic Pokemon concept. He was inspired by his childhood hobby of collecting different types of bugs in jars and trying to get them to fight each other. The game was so complex that it took no less than six years for Satori to design the game. However, the day the game hit the stores, kids in Japan instantly fell in love with some of the ugliest and most dangerous fictional creatures to have ever been visualized by man. Such was the Pokemon craze that it prompted the launch of Pokemon trading cards and a Pokemon cartoon series, both of which also became hugely popular with the kids.
Pokemon are fictional creatures that possess magical powers, which are captured and trained by humans. These Pokemon help the trainer capture other Pokemon, which then become a part of trainer’s menagerie of magical fighters, enabling him to claim the status of a Pokemon master.
Pokemon battles aren’t like anything-goes-street-brawls, but are fought as per a rigid code of rules, which allow no underhanded tricks. In the game, no creatures die in these battles and the game ends when one of the creatures faints or is captured by the opposing trainer and put in the poke ball. Lastly, Pokemon battles are such that they call for cooperation and team work, so it can be said that the game actually teaches kids the all important lesson that victory is achieved when all the players pool in their resources and work as a team.
Pokemon creatures draw their strength from various natural and (unnatural) forces.
Fire type Pokemon aren’t as powerful as electric or water types but can pulverize bugs, grass and bug types. The best fire Pokemon is Arcanine: the Fire(y) lion.
Water type Pokemon are found in abundance, and when a Pokemon master is fighting against fire, ground or rock type Pokemon, he cannot possibly choose a better fighter than a well trained water pokemon.
Apart from these fighting “types”, there are several other Pokemon types like electric, grass, ice, poison, psychic, bug, rock, ghost, dragon etc. All these Pokemons have their particular strengths and weaknesses. So a Pokemon master need to know which Pokemon should be pitted against which.
Unlike most Role Playing (RPG) games, the player (playing as a Pokemon trainer) does not participate in the battles. Instead, he hunts for powerful Pokemon and trains them, which then battles against the Pokemon of his opponents. Although, every player starts the game with just one Pokemon, he can assemble a fighting force of up to six Pokemon.
