LEGO is one of the most popular building toys manufactured by The LEGO Group. The LEGO name was derived from the Danish phrase “leg godt” which means “play well”. The LEGO bricks are interlocking bricks that can be assembled in infinite ways to construct different objects like vehicles, house, bridges, towers, working robots and many other things. These plastic bricks are packaged with an array of other parts to aid the construction of various objects. The LEGO blocks or bricks are designed to encourage young and old to use and challenge their imagination and creative ability. The company started in a small workshop owned by Ole Kirk Christiansen where wooden toys were made. In 1940, the company began manufacturing toys made of plastic. By 1949, they introduced the interlocking building bricks and called them "Automatic Binding Bricks". They were heavily inspired by the design of Kiddicraft Self-Locking Bricks that were sold in the UK.
The modern brick design was developed by Christiansen’s son, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, who found huge potential in these building blocks as a toy system for creative play. However, they were not versatile and lacked a good locking device. With improvements to the basic design, the modern LEGO brick was patented and standardized in 1958 and became part of a universal system of building blocks. Since that year, all the LEGO bricks made are still compatible with the latest LEGO brick. Moving on from the building blocks, The LEGO Group has recently diversified into providing LEGO video games based on popular themes.
The LEGO bricks feature round "studs" on top of the rectangular bricks and a hollow bottom. The rectangular blocks tightly snap together to construct various objects. They can then be pulled apart to create a new object from the same LEGO bricks.
The LEGO building blocks are made for everyone, from toddlers to adults. These building blocks are said to stimulate mental development and enhance spatial perception. Hence, they are great education toys for the overall intellectual development of children. Apart from the educational value these blocks provide, creating a variety of objects by themselves also gives children a sense of achievement.
A wide range of LEGO products are available on the market with varying themes that include: Factory City, Knight Kingdom, Dinosaurs, Bionicle, LEGO City, LEGO Racers, Duplo, Exo Force, Mindstorms, Star Wars, Batman and LEGO Preschool.
