Transformers are a line of toys which became immensely popular after it was introduced in 1984. Developed by the toy companies Takara Co., Ltd and Hasbro, these toys were designed such that the individual parts of these toys can be moved about, transforming it from a vehicle or an animal to an action robot and back again. This concept of metamorphosing toys’ was an instant hit which caught the fancy of film and toy makers alike. Soon, the markets were flooded with several transformer toys. The increasing popularity of these toys prompted Hasbro to organize numerous spin-offs that comprised of a Marvel comic book series, an animated television series, and even a full-length movie. Several spin-offs of the original series were released, which were equally popular among kids and adults.
Most of the concept and character creation for the toyline is taken care by Hasbro while Takara controls the actual production of toys. The toyline features two factions: Autobots and the evil Decepticons fighting against each other for the control of the home planet, Cybertron. The back-story, comic books and cartoons for the toyline was conceived by Jim Shooter and Dennis O’Neil from Marvel Comics. Floro Dery was actually responsible for creating visual models that went on to become guide models for the subsequent comic books and the animated cartoon.
New set of transform toys are released each year. What sets these toys apart from other toys is that they can be altered to form a new vehicle, a robot or animal. This unique feature of these toys has made it a big hit among young boys. The toys feature marvellous detail and some are even equipped with animatronics which infuse the much-needed life to these wonder toys.
The long series of Transformers toys include Transformers: Generation 1, Transformers: Generation 2, Transformers: Robots In Disguise (2001-2002), Transformers G1 Commemorative Series (2002-2005), Transformers: Go-Bots, Star Wars Transformers, and others. All of these toyline series have been immensely popular among kids and teenagers. Over the years, the transformer line of toys has evolved considerably featuring several different appearances. The toys made during 1995 to 2001 were called Beast Wars/Machines. The toys created during 2001-2002 were called Robots in Disguise, which transformed into robots. The latest in the series is the Transformers Cybertron. The old transformer toys have today become much-sought after collectable items assuming huge cult following among young boys. The recent success of the Transformers movie has also sparked revived interest in the old toylines.
