Big Brain Academy is an educational puzzle video game designed for the Nintendo DS handheld console. When the game begins the players are tested for their intelligence by playing some puzzles as fast as possible. The faster the player completes the Big Brain Academy test game, the more intelligent the player is considered to be. Depending on the Big Brain Academy test scores, the player is allowed to play the Big Brain Academy in either Practice, Test or Versus mode.
In the Practice mode, the players are allowed to play a game at their own pace. As the name suggests, the Practice mode of Big Brain Academy allows the player to practise the game play in which they faced difficulties or failed to solve certain puzzles during the Test mode. Each activity of Big Brain Academy during the Practice mode lasts for 60 seconds. Depending on the scores, the player is awarded a gold, silver or bronze medal.
The next mode of Big Brain Academy is the Test mode. Once the player feels comfortable in the Practice mode, he or she can move to the Test mode and test their problem solving skills. The player needs to undergo five puzzles in the Test mode. Once the players pass the Test mode, they are given the title of Dr. Lobe. There are five categories in the Test mode, each with three activities. These categories are called Think, Analyse, Compute, Identify and Memorise. The objective of the Test mode is to prepare the player for the Versus mode, which is the next and the highest mode of the game.
In the Versus mode, the player is allowed to play against seven competitors. This mode is the toughest stage and the player is randomly subjected to different activities to demonstrate their brainpower.
Big Brain Academy is considered to be one of the most popular puzzle games among children. There were approximately 4.61 million copies of Big Brain Academy sold in the international market by the end of 2007. Nintendo won the 59th Annual Technology and Engineering Emmy Award for developing Big Brain Academy. This video game was first launched in Japan in mid 2005. It was later released in North America, Australia and Europe in 2006.
