Burnout is a popular arcade style, single player racing game developed by Criterion Games. It was published by Acclaim for the PlayStation 2, the PlayStation 3, the PlayStation Portable, the Xbox, the Xbox 360, the Nintendo DS and the GameCube gaming consoles.
Burnout was launched in 2001. It was followed in 2002 by Burnout 2: Point of Impact and Burnout 3: Takedown in 2004. Burnout Revenge was released in 2005 for the Xbox, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 2. Burnout Legends was released at the same time for the PlayStation Portable and the Nintendo DS. Burnout Dominator was released in 2007 for the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation Portable. Burnout Paradise was launched in 2008 for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.
Burnout features several modes of game play. The Championship mode takes you across Europe and the US. This is the most popular of all the modes since it involves three race contests. The difficulty level increases as the game progresses and you need to use faster cars to reach the top position. The Head-to-Head mode pits you in two-player races against friends and CPU opponents. The Time Attack mode allows you to practise without the CPU opponents. There is also a Special mode which allows you to enjoy some unlocked secrets.
The environment is realistic. You can race through busy streets, weaving in and out of traffic. The game play is supported by excellent graphics and two camera views – an external view and an internal view. The game also boasts good quality background music and sound effects.
There is a collection of cars to choose one. These include the Compact car, the Saloon car, the Pickup car and the Muscle car (based on the Dodge Viper). Burnout 2: Point of Impact includes the Oval, the Cop Car, the Classic, the Gangster and the Hot Rod. In Burnout 3: Takedown , the original cars are not used, forepart from the Custom Coupe Ultimate. Burnout Revenge also features a new collection.
In Burnout 2: Point of Impact , the basic game play involves racing around a track. Driving is made difficult by heavy traffic and obstacles on the route. The landscape is designed around real cities and roads in the US. The Xbox version of Burnout 2: Point of Impact is subtitled “The Developer’s Cut” and features 21 new car skins. The GameCube and the PlayStation 2 version also include custom cars from the Xbox version.
