Counter-Strike is an immensely popular, action-packed video game series. The game is so popular among gaming enthusiasts that between June 1999 and September 2004 as many as 25 versions of Counter-Strike were released. All released on Xbox, Counter-Strike: Source, Counter-Strike: Anthology and Counter-Strike: Condition Zero are a few well-known versions of Counter-Strike .
A game based on the struggle for supremacy between the terrorists and the counter-terrorists Counter-Strike begins with the teams starting from opposite ends of a map. You can choose to be one of the eight character default models available – four each for the terrorists and the counter-terrorists. In the latest version of the game, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero , there are ten character models available. You begin with $800, three magazines of ammunition, a pistol, a knife, a Heckler & Koch semi-automatic pistol for the counter-terrorist and a Glock 18 pistol for the terrorist. You get a few seconds before the start of each round to buy more equipment. Points are earned for winning a round, killing an enemy, capturing a hostage or planting a bomb. If you survive a round, you get to carry forward your inventory to the next round. A scoreboard indicates the score and other statistics like whether the player is dead, carrying a bomb or is a VIP. To completely eliminate your enemy and score maximum points is the objective in each game.
Although Counter-Strike is itself a modification from Half-Life , it has its own set of further modifications. These modifications, (popularly called mods) include the Metamod and the AMX mod. The AMX mod X gives server administrators more control and therefore makes the games more secure. Some mods add robots (bots) – the artificial intelligence that simulates the gaming environment. Others like Superhero and War Craft III mods mix the first person game play of Counter-Strike with an experience system, e.g. getting points for a kill to make players more powerful as they progress in the game.
Counter-Strike has created its own culture of professional gamers, leagues, televised LAN tournaments and professional teams who even earn a living out of it. Counter-Strike has also created a culture of cheaters. To overcome this problem, Counter-Strike’s developers, Valve, have come up with an anti-cheat system, called Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC). Nevertheless, Counter-Strike continues to remain one of the most popular online gaming series and boasts a huge, dedicated and loyal fan base.
