FIFA or FIFA Football, is a series of soccer based video games released yearly by game publisher Electronics Arts under the banner of EA Sports. It is the best-selling sports based franchise in the world.
When the series began in 1993 under the name FIFA International Soccer, it was the first to have an official licence from FIFA, the global governing body for football. The current versions of the game have extensive licences from players and teams around the world for using team names, kits, stadium designs, and for the player names and likenesses used in the games. It includes teams from the English Premiership, the Italian Serie A, the German Bundesliga, the Spanish League and all the football leagues around the globe.
Since 1993, the game has been released on all major platforms, ranging from Arcade Systems and PCs to the PlayStation. The current version of the game, FIFA 2008, is available for gaming consoles such as the PlayStation 3, the PlayStation Portable, the Xbox 360, the Nintendo Wii, the Nintendo DS and the PC. It now contains the highest ever number of teams and players from around the world.
Depending on the platform, the game is played by one or two players. The players mostly use joypads in arcade systems and keyboards on the PC based systems. The current versions contain multiplayer games and leagues in which a player can challenge an opponent online. The player can even take part in interactive leagues and tournaments against many players online. This feature is available on all the game’s platforms.
The game has a user-friendly interface and a competitive Artificial Intelligence, which enhances the player’s experience. Much of the game’s success is due to the state-of-the-art graphics, the realism of the players and the highly detailed art of the surroundings. Also, several in-game features make FIFA Football even more enjoyable. The publishers have also released tournament games based on the World Cup, the European Cup and the Uefa Champions League to complement the main series. The game uses licensed international soundtracks that contain tracks from many well-known artists.
When EA launched the series there was no major competition on the market. However, now there are titles such as Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer series. Despite this, EA continues to outsell the competition.
The latest version, FIFA 2008, is made for next generation consoles and has high-definition output, high quality sound and great multiplayer modes. It has over 621 licensed teams to select from and 16 unlicensed ones. It also includes the motion-sensing ability of the Nintendo Wii and the SIXAXIS controller of the PlayStation3, which takes the gaming experience to yet another level.
