The GameBoy console was manufactured and developed by Nintendo. It was a handheld console that was released in 1989 and included the puzzle game Tetris. In fact, people often bought the GameBoy in order to play Tetris. The GameBoy was the first ever console of its kind. The Nintendo GameBoy remained popular with gamers for many years and Tetris was one of the top-selling games for the GameBoy. Nintendo later released the GameBoy Colour.
The controls of the GameBoy are positioned on the lower half of its facing frame. There is a directional pad that allows up to eight directional movements when playing games. There are also four face buttons – A, B, Select and Start. Usually, this Start button is used for its pause function when the player wants to temporarily stop the game. However, not every game utilises the face buttons in the same manner.
The GameBoy also has many accessories that work with it. For example, the GameBoy Camera can take pictures that can be printed out with the Game Boy printer. Essentially, the target audience for this camera and printer were children.
The printer could also be used together with other GameBoy games like The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX and Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition. It was a thermal printer and was released at the same time as the camera.
Also available was a GameBoy battery pack or AC adapter that had a game clip and allowed for several hours of gameplay per charge. It lasted about four to five hours and could be charged around 1000 times before it lost its strength. When first released, the battery pack was grey with purple lettering, to match the GameBoy colours.
Nintendo also developed a feature whereby it was possible to connect two GameBoy consoles using the same game or a game from the same series. This was achieved with the Game Link Cable that established a data connection between the two GameBoys.
