The Garfield computer games are based on the popular comic strip created by cartoonist Jim Davis in 1978. It is a world record holder for the most widely syndicated comic strip. The series has spawned many games, live action movies, animated series and books. There have been 13 Garfield games released to date. The first game in the series was released in 1987. It was called Garfield: Big Fat Hairy Deal and was designed by The Edge for the Atari ST, the ZX Spectrum, the Commodore 64, the Amstrad and the Amiga system. In some of these versions, the graphics were black and white.
In 1988 the second game Garfield: A Winter’s Tail was released by The Edge for the Atari ST, the Amiga, the ZX Spectrum and the Commodore 64. Then, in 1989, there was Garfield: A Week of Garfield by the Towa Chiki Corporation for the Famicom. Garfield Labyrinth was a rare game released on the Game Boy. Garfield: Caught in the Act was released in 1995 by Sega for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, the Game Gear and Windows. In 1999, Garfield’s Mad about Cats was released and resembled the story of Frankenstein.
Garfield: The Search for Spooky was released in 2005 by Interactive Vision for the Game Boy Advance. In 2006, Garfield and His Nine Lives was released by Lucky Jump Games for the Game Boy Advance and is based on a book of the same name. A 3D Garfield game was also released by Renderware for the PC and PlayStation 2. The game has many mini-games which must be completed so that Garfield will be able to clean the mess in the house before Jon gets back with a vacuum cleaner.
In 2006, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties was released by the Game Factory for the Nintendo DS, Windows and the PlayStation 2. Along with this, Garfield: Saving Arlene was also released for the PlayStation 2 in 2006. Garfield’s Nightmare by Shin’en for the Nintendo DS was released in 2007.
In the Garfield games, the user controls the character of Garfield and completes various stages or levels with different characters from the strip like Jon Arbuckle, Odie the dog and Arlene. The design of the games has changed for the better over the years. Each game now uses the full potential of the console with respect to graphics, animation, character design, AI and sound design. The latest games in the series have been designed to fully utilize the power of next generation consoles.
