Gears of War is a tactical shooter game published by Microsoft Game Studios for the PC and the Xbox. The game was developed by Epic Games and was first launched in November 2006. Five days after the American launch, the game was launched everywhere in Europe, except in Germany. The next year, the Mac OS version of the game was launched. Within the first 70 days of its launch, Gears of War achieved more than three million sales worldwide.
A third person shooter game, Gears of War is set on a fictional planet called Sera. Game play in Gears of War involves a retired war hero Marcus Fenix. Fenix, along with his team-mate Dom, has to fight the Locust Hoard. The Locust Hoards live underground and are bipeds that can either resemble locusts or animals. Fenix and Dom have to battle with the Locust Hoard in order to secure supplies of “Imulsion”, which is an energy source for humans living on planet Sera. Fenix and Dom team up with the Delta squad in order to achieve their objectives. Players of the game join as members of the Delta squad and their mission is to find the Alpha team. The Alpha team has a device which can map all the tunnels within Sera. This device can also destroy all forces of the Locust Hoards. The game begins inside a destroyed city and then moves on to the ruins of Sera, to a mining facility underneath the surface, and into the planet’s depths.
Gears of War features a multiplayer mode in which the players can invite their friends to help annihilate the Locust Hoards. During a game, if a player wants help, they can invite another player into the existing game. All players need to have a computer or an Xbox connected to the Internet for multiplayer games.
Gears of War has three difficulty levels. The third level can be attempted only when a player completes the previous two levels. At the third level, another game play begins within the game which is more challenging than the previous levels. Gears of War can also be played in split-screen mode. Here, the same situation can be seen from two different points of view. One point of view is that of the first player and the second split-screen display shows the second player’s view point of the same scene. There are four missions in the game which can be played either by a single player or by multiple players.
