In the genre of racing games, Gran Turismo is a video game popular among game buffs for its speed and features. It is part of a series of racing games developed by Polyphony Digital and was first released in 1997. Gran Turismo was designed for the PlayStation video console and is designed by Kazunori Yamauchi, a Japanese game designer and CEO of Polyphony digital. To date, Gran Turismo has had around ten sequels.
Gran Turismo is considered by users to be extremely advanced and comes complete with state-of-the-art graphics. It features 178 cars and 11 racetracks. The game requires the player to select a vehicle and take it onto various racetracks and compete with fast, manipulative drivers. There is an exhilarating feeling as you move at full throttle and zoom through 11 amazing environments supported by high-tech gizmos and mind-boggling graphics.
The game involves the use of two modes of game play – arcade and simulation. In the arcade mode, you are given the freedom to select the course you want to race on and the automobile you want to drive. On winning, you earn additional cars and courses.
In the simulation mode, there are restrictions because you can qualify for events only by winning different levels of driver’s licenses. You also get to compete in championships and, if you win, you can unlock a video and demonstration tracks. You also earn credits (or money), trophies and prize cars. The money won allows you to pay for more cars and their maintenance.
The game is advanced and has a post-race replay mode with fantastic graphics. The car engine sound is different for each car. As for the music, the Japanese version of the game had Moon over the Castle as its opening song. The American and European versions have a remix by The Chemical Brothers of the song Everything Must Go by Manic Street Preachers. Other songs include Lose Control, Chicken on a Bone reworked instrumental, Shade instrumental, Tangerine instrumental, Sweet 16, As Heaven is Wide, Oxyacetalene, Skeletal, Autonomy and Industry.
The first in the game series was well received. Its popularity can be judged by its worldwide sales. By January 2008, it was reported to have sold 2,550,000 copies in Japan, 10,000 copies in Southeast Asia, 4,300,000 copies in Europe, and 3,990,000 copies in North America.
