Developed by Traveller’s Tales, Lego Star Wars was first released in 2005, just before the final Star Wars movie. Based on the Star Wars prequel trilogy – The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005) – the video game was initially meant to be a children’s game and even received the Game of the Year Award from a leading children’s website.
In 2006 a sequel, Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, was released, then in 2007, a compilation called Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga was released.
Lego Star Wars blends the adventures of the prequel into one action-packed video game with characters that are modelled from virtual Lego blocks and disassemble into smaller parts when they are killed. With over 50 playable characters and around 18 levels of play, the game lets you play through the entire Star Wars trilogy. The prequel doesn’t include characters from the original Star Wars trilogy. Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and other well-known characters appear later in Lego Star Wars II .
The story of the game, though similar to the film, only lightly touches upon scenes that don’t include much action. Scenes have also been changed to add a bit of humour. The game’s popularity increased because it came before the release of The Revenge of the Sith yet included the plot of the film.
Apart from the various levels where you acquire super kits, a bonus level is included where the player becomes Darth Vader encountering a few rebel soldiers. This level ends with finding Princess Leia and R2-D2.
Lego Star Wars includes Wii Remote, which enables you to wield the lightsaber in a much more realistic and exciting way. There is also a Co-Op mode which enables another player to join in the existing play at any point in the current game, either as a character (in Story mode) or as anyone (in Free Play mode). There is also an Online Co-Op mode that connects users from all over the world making your game more exciting.
Different levels have various scenes from the Star Wars movies. The characters don’t speak but they act and make gestures and the game includes high-end character animation and graphics. Add to this the authentic sounds from Skywalker Sounds and the game comes to life.
Lego Star Wars is available for the Game Boy Advance, Microsoft Windows, the PlayStation 2, the Xbox, the GameCube and the Mac OS X.
