Metroid Prime is a computer game with a female protagonist called Samus Aran. It has been ranked as the third best-selling game in the world. Metroid Prime was released in November 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube in the first-person action-adventure genre.
Metroid Prime is the first 3D game in the Metroid series set against a science fiction backdrop. Samus fights it out with Space Pirates on Planet Tallon IV with wit and strength. She has to solve puzzles, unravel secrets, jump, shoot and destroy her enemies. Samus is equipped with a special health suit and a helmet that has a built-in map, radar, ammunition, thermal imaging and x-ray vision. Samus must find the 12 Chozo Artifacts to enter the Impact Crater. Players and Samus must arm themselves with different kinds of weapons to defeat the enemies. Samus is fully equipped with x-ray vision, and the ability to scan for the enemy, and attack certain machines and magnetic fields.
The game was developed by Retro Studios and published by Nintendo. It went on to win critical acclaim for its detailed graphics, vivid special effects in different environments, innovative game play, superb soundtrack and incredible ambience. It never deviated from the Metroid formula and so became very popular. Metroid Prime also became popular with true gamers for speed running. There were even communities formed to share speed running experiences among players.
The climax of the game can be more than just one ending. Each ending can be unlocked and explored depending on the situation. Prime was different from the Metroid games in its treatment of a vast and detailed story. Metroid Prime is the first installment of the Prime story line series. The original was Metroid and the next was Metroid II: Return of Samus .
In the first year alone, Metroid Prime sold over 1.49 million copies around the US earning over US$50 million in sales. The video game went on to win numerous awards such as becoming one of the Top 200 Nintendo Games Ever and winning GameSpot and Edge’s “Editors’ Choice Award”. The game also won Game of the Year and Excellence in Level Design from the 2003 Game Developers Conference and the Console First-Person Action Award from the sixth Annual Interactive Achievement Awards.
