Sony’s PlayStation console belongs to the fifth generation of video games consoles The successors to this include a series of console and handheld game devices like the Net Yaroze, the PS1, the PocketStation, the PlayStation 2 (PS2), the slimline PS2, the PlayStation Portable, the PSX, and the Playstation 3. Several video game titles have had a successful launch with the PlayStation console, for example, Battle Arena Toshinden, Twisted Metal, War Hawk Philosoma and Ridge Racer. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy VII, Gran Turismo, Grand Theft Auto, GTA 2, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Metal Gear Solid, Parasite Eve, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, Spyro the Dragon, Teken, Tomb Raider, Twisted Metal, Wipeout, and FIFA Football 2005 are some of the more popular PlayStation games.
The primary controller for the PlayStation console was the DualShock controller, which had two analog sticks and a built-in force-feed feature. Later a modchip installed in the PlayStation console enhanced its capabilities giving more options, such as the option to play PAL format games on NTSC consoles.
A more expensive version of the PlayStation, the Net Yaroze, had a unique feature, which allowed you to play games from other territories. Another version, the PS1, was launched in 2001. This console was an instant hit as it had a small LCD screen and an adapter, which meant it could be used in cars. It also supported all PlayStation software. It differed from the original console in its looks, the Graphical User Interface, and the increased security from the modchip. The serial port required for multi-player games was also absent.
PlayStation 2 is another successor to the PlayStation console with backward compatibility. This was achieved by including the important parts of the PS1 in the new design, which ensured all the games compatible with the PS1 could still be played. The third in the series was the PlayStation 3 (PS3), which was released in 2006. This again had complete backward compatibility. In 2004, Sony released a handheld portable console called the PlayStation Portable (PSP). Unlike other successors, this console was not compatible with other PlayStation games. It only supports games specifically developed for PSP consoles.
The success of the PlayStation consoles marked a new milestone in the video game console market. The use of the optical disc format technology, as opposed to the earlier cartridge-based technology attributed to this success.
