SpongeBob SquarePants is a fictional, animated sea sponge cartoon that is aired on the children’s channel Nickelodeon. SpongeBob SquarePants is the central character of the cartoon. The show forms part of the Nicktoons that feature on Nickelodeon.
SpongeBob is the creation of Stephen Hillenburg, a marine biologist who is also an excellent animator. The show is produced under his own production house, United Plankton Pictures Inc. Tom Kenny is the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants.
SpongeBob lives in an underwater township called Bikini Bottom located in the Pacific Ocean. He is square and yellow with a pineapple for a house and is an earnest and strong optimist. He looks like a porous cube of cheese and is always dressed in a white shirt, red tie and brown pants with black canvas shoes and has lovely, big blue eyes and bucky teeth. SpongeBob has a faithful pet snail for company called Gary, who purrs like a kitten. His closest pals are the chubby pink starfish, Patrick Star, and an adventure-seeking furry squirrel called Sandy Cheeks. SpongeBob has a grumpy little squid neighbour called Squidward Tentacles who’s a perfectionist and works with him. He simply hates SpongeBob for his over enthusiastic nature and silly antics. More often than not, the naïve SpongeBob finds himself along with Patrick, in a situation that spells trouble.
SpongeBob premiered on 17 July, 1999, and has been a huge success with adults as well as children. The show was an instant hit due to its cross-cultural references and clever word play. SpongeBob SquarePants: The Movie was released in 2004 and was a big hit.
When a show, especially an animated one, becomes such a big hit, it’s usual that a game will be released based on the series. Games like The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie Game and SpongeBob’s Atlantis SquarePants have been released on a variety of gaming platforms such as the PSP and the PS2, the Game Boy Advance, the Xbox and the Nintendo DS and Nintendo GameCube.

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie Game was developed by THQ. The basic plot of the game is very similar to that of the film. Plankton has stolen King Neptune’s crown and SpongeBob teams up with Patrick to bring it back. There are eighteen levels in the game. However, the PC version of the game has a different gam play and fewer levels.
SpongeBob’s Atlantis SquarePants is based on the television series. It can also be downloaded and played on your mobile. The game’s plot revolves around half of an Atlantean Amulet that is missing and discovered by SpongeBob and Patrick. When shown to Squidward, he believes it to be a part of an original amulet, which is still in display in the Bikini Bottom museum. Of course, the Amulet has magical powers and when joined opens a magical pathway to the ancient city of Atlantis.
